In May we finished the 1960s. It was a momentous time! We studied the War in Viet Nam and the terrible division it caused in the United States. We learned about race riots and Black Power, as well as the United Farm Workers, women’s, and American Indian movements.
We learned about the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. We learned about the Presidency and resignation of Richard Nixon. We learned about Woodstock.
We learned about the big Constitutional decisions: Mapp, Miranda, and Wainwright.
We learned about space exploration and the moon landing. We learned about the growing awareness of community health: “smoking is hazardous to your health” and the work of Ralph Nader in consumer protection.
We listened to Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and the Beatles. We also listened to Otis Redding, the Monkees, Jimmy Hendrix, and John Coltrane. We listened to the “Ballad of the Green Berets,” Marvin Gaye, and Simon & Garfunkle.
Our artists of the month were pop artists Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana.
With May comes the end of the school year. We look forward to the summer but will miss the camaraderie of the classroom. It’s been a wonderful year!
